No time for a real post today, but thought I’d take a minute to wish everyone a happy May Day! As a gal who is highly invested in worker and immigrant justice, May Day is one of my favorite holidays. Not familiar with it? Read more here, or watch this video here. Yay May Day! Power to the People!
Do you celebrate May Day?
Ha! I had a very similar introduction to my post. How did you celebrate?
Well, this was my facebook status today: “I believe it was Alanis Morrisette who said, “It’s like writing a dissertation about the labor movement, and having to miss the May Day march because you’re on a deadline to get it to your committee…isn’t it ironic?” First time in nearly a decade that I won’t be in the streets with workers, immigrants, and allies, but there in spirit! Power to the people!”
A bummer, but at least I got to be writing/thinking about workers, and celebrating them in my heart. : )
Is May Day like Labour Day or something similar?
May Day was the original labor day, but because it has very radical, anti-capitalist roots, the US government made a different labor day to distract from the more radical holiday. In 2006, it became a day to celebrate the working-class and immigrants in the US!
