Friday Five

Hi readers, happy Friday. Thanks for all your warm messages and comments regarding my grandfather’s passing. Although the pain of his loss hasn’t ceased, I think we’re all working hard to get through the days a bit easier and figure out our new normal.

I’m on a trip for dissertation research right now, so I’m reporting to you from a hotel room. (and this internet is costing me dollars. so dumb). Anyway, as usual, I wanted to give you five neat things to end your week and take you into the weekend…..

1. Occupy v. Whole Foods

This article from Alternet talks about activists’ efforts to save a UC-Berkeley farm from getting sold to Whole Foods. Reclaiming land, the activists explain, is a way to provide sustainable social change : “A foreclosure defense will keep a family in its home. A space occupation will put people into a new space…But a land occupation can feed hundreds of people. If all that happens on this land is that we grow food, then it’s a success.”

2. The low-down on juice feasting

You read that right. Feasting not “fasting.” Sabine from Some Like It Raw gives a great primer on juice fasts, feasts, and liquid detoxes. I’ve yet to do a juice fast or feast, but I’m definitely thinking about it…..

Have you ever done a juice fast? A juice feast? What do you think of them?

3. Dark Chocolate Coconut Treats

New favorite blog alert! I found Beth’s Tasty Yummies site through Pinterest, which confirmed what I’ve known for sometime: Pinterest is amazing. (!!!!!!!!!!). Yes, one of the many wonderful things about that time-sucking gem of a website is that it leads you to drool-inducing food bloggers like Beth. Almost all the desserts on her blog are vegan, gluten-free, and refined sugar-free. Like these beauties:

4. Three-Day Reboot

Whole Living is doing a mini-version of their January cleanse program. So if that aforementioned juice cleanse is not for you, maybe consider this mostly-solid food recharge for your system. I’m planning on giving it a whirl after I’m back from Cleveland next week.

5. (More) Cute Kitten Video(s)

Because she knew I was having a tough week, my good friend Dana posted this uh-dorable video to my fb. Just watch. And then if you ever have a bad day or a tough week (or a tough month, like I seem to be experiencing), just replay this, and be grateful for even the smallest moment of joy.

[And, yes, it was only a couple weeks ago that I posted a different cute kitten video. Deal!]

Have a great weekend.

First of all, I’m so sorry about your Grandfather. I’m sending you good thoughts.

Not a fan of “feasting” — or fasting. I think it’s a lot of sugar, not enough protein and fat, and a good way to slow metabolism down. I do know people for whom it has done wonders, so I try to keep an open mind and acknowledge that different things work for different people, but I would never recommend one unless there were very, very particular health circumstances.

Hey Gena, thanks for the condolences and for the insight. I have the same worries about it, which is why I’ve never actually ended up partaking in a “feast’/”fast.” I’ve done the CLEAN program three times, which allows solid food for lunch, but liquid for breakfast and dinner, but even that–especially for someone who likes to work out—has started to seem counter-intuitive in terms of getting proper nutrients and keeping that metabolism going. I loved doing it my first time because it got me to stop eating processed junk and introduced me to so many amazing foods (and bloggers–you included!), but my last two rounds were less than awesome, so I think I’m just going to stick to what works: balance!
