Another Friday, another Five! I’m really ready for this week to be over. I’ve alluded to the fact that there is some challenging stuff going on in my life right now, and I have to say that the weekends are at least somewhat helpful in managing some of this stress. Even though I technically work on the weekends (academics never stop), it’s not as bad because I don’t have to report to my office, and because Mike is around, which makes things better too!
I sort of feel like that scene from Zoolander when Derek is in the mines, and that “Everybody’s Working for the Weekend” song comes on. (Do you know what I’m talking about? Please tell me you also love Zoolander!).
Working for the weekend, indeed!
1. Yoga Reads
I posted two yoga articles on the Rebel Grrl Kitchen FB this week, and thought they were worth re-posting here. One is an NPR story about the way Western yoga is a form of cultural appropriation. The other is a really lovely piece by a woman who says yoga helped her change her perspective about her body, and about life.
Are you a yogi? What do you think of these articles?
2. Is Your Commute Killing You?
A couple weeks ago, I got an email from a reader who is part of a fascinating project that highlights the negative impact on our health from commuting. Long commutes raise stress levels, increase weight, cause us to lose sleep, and triple our rate of heart attack, (to name a few). I feel so lucky that I don’t work a traditional 9-5, and that I only bike or take the bus, so on the rare occasion that I’m on the freeway during rush hour, I’m not behind the wheel. But for those of you who do have to make that dreaded voyage, take a glance at this graphic to learn more about “the killer commute.”
3. Grain Free Chocolate Coconut Cookies
I’ve been a fan of Anja’s Food 4 Thought blog for quite some time, but have yet to make any of her beautiful recipes. That may change soon because these grain free, vegan, refined sugar free cookies look amazing!
4. Making Push-Ups More Effective
Do you ever feel like you do a type of exercise for so long that you honestly don’t remember the actual proper form? I sort of feel that way about push-ups. Because I can actually do a decent number of push-ups (and not the “girl” kind–(major danger quotes, because that’s obvs dumb)), sometimes I’m like, “Wait…am I really doing these right?!” This guide from Fit Sugar is really helpful, and also has a link to 14 different varieties of push-ups to work different parts of your arms and give yourself a new challenge.
5. Oil-Free Salad Dressings
It got pretty chilly here again, but that hasn’t stopped my belly from craving spring foods. All I’ve wanted for dinner lately is salad. Huge, veggie-heavy salads with healthy dressings. So I was super stoked to find this long list of oil-free salad dressing recipes from the Healthy Girl’s Kitchen. Must make them all.
Have a great weekend!
