Friday Dinner-Date Night!

Dinner-date night? On a detox cleanse? But how?

Tao, that’s how. (tee-hee, rhyming!)

Tao Natural Foods is one of my favorite local Minneapolis spots. It’s both a cafe and a health food store, and thus all the cafe menu items are healthy. It’s all vegetarian, and pretty much anything can be made vegan. They offer delicious breakfasts, satisfying lunches, and hearty, amazing dinners. Plus, they have a giant selection of juices and smoothies. Because of this, I knew that it could be a date-night spot, even when I’m on a detox that requires I eat a liquid dinner.

When we arrived, I was quite hungry after a super-intense CorePower Yoga 2 class. I have a Groupon for Corepower, so I’m trying to get there everyday of my discounted month. This often means it serves as a second workout in the evening, since I’m pretty married to my morning workout routines of alternating cardio (relatively short runs/biking/abs) and strength training and/or circuit training (via Jillian,, etc.). So today, I did a 4 mile run in the morning and this intense yoga class in the evening. Truthfully, this is not recommended while detoxing–I definitely notice I don’t have as much energy as I do when I’m eating more solid meals. Anyway, all that is to say, that I was hungry. That hungry feeling almost made me order the Muscle Mania smoothie (peanut butter, almond milk, banana, maple syrup, hemp protein), but I really am trying to avoid sugar in all its forms this week, which includes maple syrup. So instead I went with my favorite Tao smoothie, with some minor modifications; The Mint GreenTea Smoothie has banana, green tea, fresh mint (I saw them pick it from their planter outside the store!), hemp milk and vanilla. I added hemp protein, spirulina, and asked if they could add spinach too.

Mike ordered our favorite dish of theirs, the dish that made us fall in love with the restaurant in the first place. It’s called “The Royale” and comes with steamed veggies, black beans, avocado, sauerkraut, and flax oil, all on a bed of brown rice. Look at how gorgeous it looks! (And it tastes as good as it looks!):

The best part is that we live literally two blocks away! Yeah date night!
