Friday Five

Happy Friday! I hope you had a lovely week. Here is another picture from my photo shoot with Kimberly Stakes. I call it “hipster juice.”

As promised, the Friday Five is back. Here are four things from the internet and one list of stuff that made me happy from the week. Enjoy!

Food in Prison

There have been three things that have reminded me of my conversations about food with the incarcerated boys to whom I taught yoga in the jail. Anytime I asked about their meals, they would scrunch their faces in disgust and talk about how gross it was. That’s why I was first annoyed to see this spread of the cast of Orange is the New Black with fresh, organic framer’s market veggies in their prison glamor shots; then equally disturbed to read about the forced “loaf” given to prisoners as punishment; then mildly heartened to read about the prison garden programs that are happening.

  1. I have read about that tea stuff before and it’s so scary/discouraging! A lot of times we drink tea because it’s healthy and turns out so many common brands are the opposite! And yes always cook your greens, including kale if you have thyroid problems! I did this for a while and found it so helpful!

  2. Wow, food in prison is not something I’ve really thought about before. Incarcerated people are seriously so often hardly even considered citizens, it’s so sad. I’ve never actually watched Orange is the New Black and have heard mixed reviews. What do you think?

    • I have *so* many thoughts on OitNB. It has tons of problems, but the trans character, played by Laverne Cox, is probably the best representation of a transwoman that’s ever been on TV. Like most media, there are both important and problematic things happening, but it’s definitely worth watching!
